By Thierry Babineaux TEXT SIZE Minus Plus

There are different types of swelling that your dog might be prone to and this will raise a serious dog health issue. The swellings can be that of a specific organ that is not visible from the outside or it can be swelling of the skin or face, which is visible from the outside.

When you get your first pup home, after getting to know him, the most important thing for you to do is take him to a vet and get a dog health checkup done. A dog health check is something that you will need to do on a regular basis so that he or she can lead a healthy and happy life. You can ask your vet different types of pet health questions as this will help you to not only identify a symptom for a disease but also help in taking care of the pet health of your dog. The most common types of swellings that may appear in a dog and that affect dog health include:

1. Facial Swelling
2. Swelling of the abdomen
3. Swelling of the mouth
4. Swelling over the nose
5. Swelling of the throat
6. Mammary gland swelling

One of the most serious swelling dog health issues is that of abdomen swelling. Swelling of his abdomen is caused by the following:

• Spleen cancer
• Dilated cardiomyopathy
• Gastric Dilatation Volvulus (GDV): This is also known as bloat

Dilated cardiomyopathy is a fatal dog health issue as it deals with the disease of the heart muscle. It occurs more in larger dog breeds and mostly in younger males. The swelling in the abdomen can lead to fainting, constant coughing, intolerance towards exercise, and loss of appetite. This is one dog health issue that can go undetected but if undetected and untreated for a long time, it can turn out to be fatal for your dog. Spleen cancer is another life threatening pet health issue that can cause his abdomen to swell. It can even lead to weight loss. Last but not the least, Gastric Dilatation Volvulus (GDV), is one of the most deadly dog health conditions that involve swelling of his abdomen. In this, his stomach might get twisted and as a result of that his abdomen will get filled with liquid and air.

The second most common swelling problem faced by dogs is swelling of the mouth. The causes for swelling of the mouth include

• Dental infection
• Insect stings
• Intake of toxic plants

Eating toxic plants like philodendron can lead to swelling of the throat as well as the mouth in most dogs. There are several varieties of flowers and plants that are potentially dangerous to dog health and can cause severe kidney damage too apart from swelling. Stings from wasps or bees as well as dental infections will also cause swelling of the gums and the mouth. These can be treated by taking him to the vet as soon as you find something abnormal about your dog.
